Carrying your child in a baby carrier is a fantastic way to create closeness and security while keeping your hands free. To ensure both you and your child have the best experience of babywearing, we have compiled a simple checklist.
1. Safety first: Keep an eye on the airways
- Carry the child at kiss level, i.e., high enough that you can easily kiss the child on the crown of the head.
- The child's face should always be visible.
- Keep the chin free from the chest so that the airways are clear.
- Listen to the child's breathing and be attentive to any obstructions.
2. Ergonomic position: Comfortable and secure
- The child should be seated in an M-shaped position with the knees higher than the bottom.
- The back and neck should be supported, but the child should still be able to move naturally.
- Ensure that the baby carrier is adjusted to distribute the weight evenly and avoid strain on your back and shoulders.
3. Right fit: Adjust for you and your child
- Shoulder straps and waist belt should fit snugly but comfortably.
- Try leaning forward – the child should sit close to your body without slipping away.
- For newborns: Use a baby carrier designed for small babies or an insert if needed.
4. Feel the temperature: Neither too hot nor too cold
- Dress the child in layers that can be taken off or put on as needed.
- Check the child's neck to see if it is too warm – it should be warm but not sweaty.
- Use sunscreen and a hat if needed, as well as weather-appropriate outerwear if it's cold.
5. Listen to your child
- Keep an eye on the child's signals – do they look comfortable and seem satisfied?
- If the child seems restless, adjust the baby carrier or try a different position.
- Take breaks as needed to stretch your legs and vary the carrying position.
By following this checklist, you ensure that your babywearing experience is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for both you and your child. Happy babywearing!
